Professor Li Wai-keung states that the faculty will continue to organise various cultural and social events to enrich the lives of our research students. Seating next to him are Dr Anthony Suen Chun-kit, centre, and Dr David Chan Tse-tin, left, both from MIT.

More than 30 research postgraduate students (RPg students), graduates, their supervisors, the Dean of FLASS, and other supporting administrative staff revelled in a BBQ party on the afternoon of 6 December 2024. Professor Li Wai-keung, Dean of FLASS, and Professor Daniel Chow Hung-kay, Associate Dean (Research and Postgraduate Studies) of FLASS, officiated the BBQ gathering. The party, the first outdoor social event in a series of enrichment and social activities that kicked off in September, served as an escape for our research students and faculty to enjoy tasty food and drinks, fun games and engaging talks on a sunny afternoon near Tai Mei Tuk.

At the outdoor BBQ venue, students, faculty, and supporting staff enjoyed nature and fresh air. The scent of grilled delights wafted through the air, enticing everyone to partake in a sumptuous spread of culinary treats. The grill plate was laden with a diverse selection of dishes, including juicy chicken, tender beef, and tasty vegies. Special care was taken to include halal options, ensuring that all dietary preferences were respected so everyone could relish the feast. To make the meal even more unforgettable, the grilled food was complemented by vibrant salads, delectable desserts, and cold-drinks. A whole roast suckling pig was served as the special treat of the day.

Halal food is being served at the BBQ party to cater to dietary preferences of individuals from various faiths.

Besides food and drinks, a quiz activity was organised not only to provide entertainment but also to brush up on knowledge about the University and faculty; winners received mementoes as prizes. “The afternoon was alive with laughter and joy as participants engaged in casual chatter. Our dedicated educators are passionate about mentoring the next generation of scholars by coaching them academically as well as sharing life experiences in more relaxed settings. Activities like today’s BBQ party provide opportunities for students to interact with peers and mentors, fostering relationships that help our students and graduates throughout their academic and professional careers,” Professor Li Wai-keung, Dean of FLASS, said.

Dr Zaheen Ahmed Iqbal receives a prize at the quiz activity from Professor Song Yanjie from MIT. A total of ten questions about the University and faculty were posed during the activity.

Among the participants was Dr Zaheen Ahmed Iqbal from India who has recently completed his doctoral studies under the supervision of Professor Daniel Chow, Chair Professor of Health and Sports Science from the Department of Health and Physical Education. Dr Zaheen enjoyed the chance to mingle with professors and fellow research students outside the confines of academia. “The informal setting allowed for easy and open conversations, where ideas flowed freely, sparking potential collaborations and fostering new friendships. It was invigorating to witness everyone at ease, engaging in meaningful discussions that built connections extending beyond the academic realm. This sense of community and belonging, often elusive in the fast-paced academic world, was palpable throughout the event,” said the physiotherapist turned scholar in physical therapy.

Ms Skylar Sun Yuanke says that the BBQ party provides her with an opportunity to connect with faculty members from her and other departments under FLASS. She receives a prize from Dr Anthony Suen Chun-kit from MIT at the quiz activity.

This was the second time that Ms Skylar Sun Yuanke joined a social activity organised by the faculty. “I really appreciated the effort the faculty put into arranging the BBQ event. The food was delicious, and the atmosphere was incredibly supportive. It was great to engage in games with peers, professors, and faculty staff. I even received a lovely gift in the quiz. Connecting with faculty members was another highlight for me. All these experiences made my heart feel warm during my doctoral journey,” she said. Hailing from her home city of Chengdu in Sichuan, Skylar started her PhD programme in 2021 under the supervision of Dr Chan Man-ho from the Department of Science and Environmental Studies.

Miss Tao Lei, left, says the sense of community and togetherness is the most memorable thing of the BBQ activity.

Miss Tao Lei from Nanchang, Jiangxi Province, a PhD student under the supervision of Professor Song Yanjie from the Department of Mathematics and Information Technology, also shared a sense of togetherness in the BBA activity. “The party was an absolutely delightful event. The food choices were incredible, but what made the event particularly memorable was the cheerful atmosphere created by the fun games and the meaningful conversations with professors and fellow research students. It was a wonderful opportunity to connect with everyone in a relaxed, informal setting and share not only academic interests but also personal stories and laughter,” she said.

Professor Daniel Chow thanked every participant for joining the BBQ event. “I hope everyone enjoyed an afternoon filled with delicious food, entertaining activities, and opportunities to hang out with one another. The BBQ party has successfully brought individuals from different backgrounds together while promoting a sense of community and togetherness. We will continue to organise a variety of enriching activities for our RPg students, from latte art workshops to barbecues, sports events, and cultural excursions,” he said.

Other than Professor Li and Professor Chow, faculty who joined the BBQ event included Dr Carman Leung Ka-man from the Department of Health and Physical Education; Professor Song Yanjie, Dr Anthony Suen Chun-kit; and Dr David Chan Tse-tin from the Department of Mathematics and Information Technology; as well as Dr Cheng Jinping from the Department of Science and Environmental Studies.
